Magdalena Jakubska-Szymiec

Sax player

Ph.D. Magdalena Jakubska-Szymiec discovered her passion for the saxophone at an early age. She received her degree in Saxophone Performance with honours in 2006 from the K.Szymanowski Academy of Music in Katowice, Poland under the guidance of Bernard Steuer. Continued her instrumental studies under the direction of Radek Knop at Conservatoire de Region de Perpignan (France). She got many prizes in national and international competitions like: 1st prize of Yamaha Music Foundation of Europe Scholarship 2006 (Wroclaw, PL), 2nd prize in 1st International Saxophone Competition in Opole, PL,1st prize in XXVII National Ensemble Competition in Wroclaw, 1st prize Grand Prix and Appolin Rydwan award in National Competition for “Young Musician” in Szczecinek, PL, three times awarded by Scholarship of Polish Ministry of Culture (Warsaw, 1997, 1998, 2000). During her studies, she developed her saxophone skills at many master classes for classical saxophone elsewhere in Europe and USA with Marcus Stockhausen, Claude Delangle, Claus Olesen, Eugene Rousseau, Jean-Marie Londeix and Joel Versavaud.

She regularly performs as a soloist with renowned orchestras that includes the National Symphonic Orchestra and Silesian Philharmonic in Katowice, Orchestra of New Music and “Aukso” Orchestra.

In addition to her activities as a practising musician, she lectures at the International Master Class for classical saxophone and gives many master classes elsewhere in Europe as well as the USA. She is a juror at national and international saxophone competitions.
In 2013 she defended her doctoral thesis titled “ Evolution of saxophone technique in the context of performing practice in chosen music literature examples from XX century”. This dissertation was published in 2014 including CD recording titled “SAXIDIOMA”.

In 2016 SOLITON  label released her debut albumŁukasz Woś – Works for saxophone and piano.

Currently employed as Assistant Professor of Saxophone in the Department of Wind Instruments at the I.J.Paderewski Academy of Music in Poznań (Poland)
